Why Laughter is a Benefit to our Lives. Part 1

Laughter is a Benefit to our Lives

Laughter is a benefit to our lives for many reasons, such as stress relief, boosts our mood, diminishes pain, and supports our mental health, just to name a few.

It has been my experience, to find many benefits to my life when laughter becomes a part of my every day. When I experience stress in my life it causes physical pain. Spending time laughing with a friend or watching something comical on t.v., releases the tension quickly. This is probably due to the release of endorphins which is known to relieve pain.

In some instances when I have felt anger and I find it hard to release, laughter gives me the break I need. It allows me to calm down and try to look at a situation in another way. It is often all I need to get back on track feeling happier and more apt to deal with the issue I am facing. It is important to note that laughter will help me to forgive the person I may be angry with, releasing even more tension.

Laughter always makes me feel good. It helps me to keep a positive outlook on the negative situations I find myself in. No wonder research shows that laughter lowers stress hormones, boosts the immune system. Hey, laughter even burns calories, that is wonderful news. Laughter is a benefit in our lives and we truly need to incorporate it into our everyday lives.

Laughter is an Essential Element for our Health

Laughter is an essential element not only for the health of the self but to the health of our relationships. I have a wonderful friend and we have lots of deep down belly laughs, and man, it feels really great! I can truly be myself with her; I can let that crazy, silly side of my personality show. I can’t be that way with just anyone actually, because most people just wouldn’t get it – but she does – and I am so grateful to her for that.

I have been fortunate in my life to always find people who love to laugh. I owe them a debt of gratitude for having made my life a better experience for me. Some people like to tease me and that is because they know I can roll with the punches. But forget it if they can’t take it as well as give it. Those of us who engage in this type of banter are able to laugh at ourselves and our circumstances. This is not for everyone, so be careful how you use this.

I Have Learned Along the Way

I have learned along the way just how important laughter is to a relationship. I have finally learned to laugh at myself so now I can allow others to laugh along with me. It lessens the intensity of disagreements, how can you be angry when you’re busy laughing with someone about an issue that you don’t agree upon? Laughter just makes things easier. It is also infectious, so it helps people to bond together, it increases intimacy and happiness.

“Your sense of humor is one of the most powerful tools you have to make certain that your daily mood and emotional state support good health.”
Paul E. Mc Ghee, Ph.D.

There has been loads of research done on the benefits of laughter on health. And it seems everyone agrees that people who laugh a lot seem to have a better quality of life. Some reports indicate that their pain is reduced; one person said “ten minutes of laughter allows him two hours of pain free sleep.” Some reported lower blood sugar levels, one researcher noted that 10-15 minutes of laughter burned 50 calories (Maciej Buckowskie).

“We change physiologically when we laugh. We stretch muscles throughout our face and body, our pulse and blood pressure go up, and we breathe faster, sending more oxygen to our tissues.” (Morgan Griffin) In the end, although there is no proof that laughter is good medicine, we all know it can’t hurt.
