How a Look Into the Past can be Beneficial to You.

Look Into the Past

I find it amazing that when I did a search about “the past”, I hardly found anything online. I believe that although things have happened to us, good, bad, and everything in between, it is best to leave the past where it belongs, in the past. It’s similar to the future, leave it in the future where it belongs.
It’s okay to look into the past but don’t stay there.

Domestication

I also believe in the importance of using our past as a teacher for today and tomorrow. The lessons we have learned in order to live a better life should not be forgotten. For example; when you were quite young you learned to stay away from hot things, that could burn you. So you learned not to touch hot stuff if you didn’t want to get burnt. If you didn’t learn, chances are that you got burned again somewhere along the way.
We learned to survive. How to communicate, to eat, to walk, and all the other basics about how to live in a human body. As you grew older you continued to learn how to get what you needed, to develop. You also became socialized. And you had to learn how to get on in the world. There was also a need to know how to interact with people outside your family circle. For some, it started very young, in daycares, kindergartens, and then off to school.

You Have Been Domesticated

You became domesticated from the time you were born. Probably by your parents first, brothers and sisters, friends, and all others who formed your circle of humans. They were all too happy to form you into something they believed you should be. Eventually, society joined in. You were too little to make your own decisions. Therefore, you began to agree to live life according to what everyone else told you to do and what to be.
One day you decided to do things according to your own beliefs, and in a sense, domesticate yourself. Others may not have liked what you did, others didn’t. You made mistakes, but you had to learn to how to live your own way. Therefore, you learned what worked and what didn’t work. Sometimes you learned the lessons that life had to teach, and you made better choices for yourself. However, like most of us, you didn’t necessarily adhere to those lessons.

Yesterday

As you can see the lessons from the past are essential to your growth and development. So it is very important to your survival to learn your lessons well. It’s all still there tucked in a file, and now you can go back and check that file out. Maybe you want to know if that person you’re so crazy about is really the best person for you. You may remember someone from your past who had no idea about the consequences of lying. No idea how disruptive it was to a relationship. Now this person you care lies too. Looking at that file reminds you to walk away or to be careful with this person.

Now you have learned from the past, you can shut that file away until you need it again. You can now leave that memory where it belongs, in the past. Don’t dwell on it, or on anything else in that file. You can’t change what has already happened. Dwelling on those memories will only make you sad, miserable, angry, nothing good will come out of it. Even if you have good memories that make you happy, you still need to let them go. Therefore, live your life for today. A look into the past is enough, don’t stay there.

What you can do now, is make use of the lessons you learned and shut the file, . Make changes if you feel you should, and live your life in the present. Better choices for today, means a better tomorrow. Leave yesterday where it belongs, live only for today, and allow tomorrow to take care of itself.

Tomorrow

You can learn every day how to live a more complete life. Learn how to be happier, healthier, how to live a life of purpose, and to be more peaceful. Your tomorrows are going to get better all the time if you do.
If you need to look into your past for information, do so. If you find things you need to forgive yourself or others for, do so. We all make mistakes, but we don’t need to think about them all the time. You can never go back to change anything. This is because those times are gone and you never have to live them again. Therefore, only look into the past when you need to.
Tomorrow will never come, you can never live tomorrow. You can plan your days ahead of time, make appointments, plan what needs to be planned. However, you will never actually live tomorrow, just as it’s about to arrive, it turns into today. So maybe the plans you make today will pan out, maybe they won’t. There is no way you can know what is going to happen tomorrow or five minutes from now. Of course you can plan for it, but once you do that, you can close that file too. Therefore allowing tomorrow to take care of itself.

Today

All you really have to do is to live for today. Give it the best you’ve got! If your goal is to be the best you can be, then do it. You can never let yourself down if you always do your best. Choose to forgive yourself for past mistakes, don’t live those things over and over again, let those things go.
Learn to love yourself and be kind to yourself. If you have to look back, then find things to celebrate about yourself. Look at your successes, not your failures. Besides, there are no failures just learning experiences.

It can be Difficult to let go

I know how difficult it can be to just let go, I know because I have been there too. And I still go there at times, but it gets easier with practice. It’s so hard at times, because we’ve been hurt, we’re angry with ourselves and with others. Some of us may need help to get past these things. If you need help, get it. It’s important to acknowledge your feelings, but it’s also important to let go of past heartaches. If you allow the past to drag you down – it will. Healing doesn’t usually happen overnight. However, we have to take that first step to heal the past so we can live a better present.
You are exactly what you are meant to be, and, in the place you are meant to be. You are perfect just as you are. So live in the present. Take every happy moment you can grab on to and live it to the fullest. As you learn to do this, these moments will grow into minutes and hours. And eventually to days at a time.
You are worth more than you can ever imagine.
“What you need to know about the past is that it has all worked together to bring you to this very moment. And this is the moment you can choose to make everything new. Right now.”
