Getting Help

I Ask for Help

We all need help now and again. Getting it is not the issue, but asking for it can be humiliating, Most of us have been raised to become independent and that does not encourage anyone to ask for a hand out..

There were times in my life when asking for support made me feel as though I was giving my power away. I felt it meant that another person had some control over my circumstances. And I felt that I was putting myself in a vulnerable position. However, this has not been the norm.

In most cases people have been kind and understanding. Most have been glad to be there for me when they could.

Problems cropped up for me when I was worried that someone else may have been worse off than I was. I never wanted to someone to help if they were unable to do so. So many people are willing to help even if they are put in an impossible situation.

How not to Ask for Help

Please do not use manipulation when asking for someone to support you. This is the last way you should be asking for help. getting help is not about manipulation.

Don’t try to make people feel as though they owe you for some reason or other. Even if you have helped them in the past, this is not the way to ask for aid. Making someone feel guilty will send them running in the other direction.

How to Ask for Help

Be honest, specific, and concise when you ask for help. The less said the better, and the fewer chances you will have to put your foot in your mouth.

By-the-way, do not forget to be thankful and grateful for the aid you receive. Would you expect this from someone you gave a handout to? Do onto others as you would have others do to you.
