Color Breathing

What is Color Breathing?

Color breathing is a technique used to activate different forms of energy. It helps to remove negative energy and replaces it with positive energy. Perhaps someone feels stressed and overwhelmed, using the color green, as I do, has the effect of calming me down.

This system is sometimes used for therapy both for adults and children. The terms used are color therapy and chromotherapy. It encourages focus on color in an effort to be in the present moment. Also used to combat feelings of discomfort, anxiety, depression and stress. (Heart Line)

Color breathing is sometimes used as a yoga technique and during meditation exercises.

Intentional Breathing

Although this is fairly new to me, I have tried using this process during meditation. So far it has proven to be delightful.

After spending 5 minutes or so getting into a deep meditative state, I can then begin to focus on a specific color. Depending on the negative energy that I am producing at the time. The idea is to focus on a color that will produce a positive or opposite energy to what I am feeling. Therefore cleansing me of any negativity coursing through my body.

For example; the color green tends to produce a relaxing force within me. Therefore, I use green when I am feeling anxious or stressed.

If I feel sad , yellow seems to bring me into a happy state, it reminds me of children playing on the beach on a sunny afternoon.

The Method

Color Breathing

The method I use for color breathing is simple;

  1. I relax into a state where I feel as though my body is asleep but, my mind is very much awake.
  2. Then, I breathe in deeply and fill my head with fresh new energy, as though a bright light is filling my mind. I hold that energy in my head for several seconds.
  3. As I hold this energy in my head I picture bright green energy flowing through my body, from my head to my toes. The new clean energy pushes out the old negative through my feet and out of my body.
  4. This releases the negative energy and any negative emotions and feelings attached to me. It all dissipates out into nothingness.
  5. I then continue to do these steps until I begin to feel serene and calm.

Color Breathing

Color breathing is a method I can use even if I am not in a deep meditative state. It is, however, important to do deep breathing in order to relax the body and to lower the heart rate. Deep breathing also calms the mind and thus, makes it easier to visualize the color you are focused upon.

Color Representations

Different colors may represent different meanings to many people. However, through research, I discovered, most people seem to recognize somewhat the same meanings to colors. I also had to take into account that many cultures, religions, and other groups definitely have their own take on colors.

Most common representations are as follows;

  • Blue often represents peace and relaxation.
  • Green is the color of calmness, and some see it as a healing color.
  • Magenta is the color of release. It is also said to bring out spiritual energies.
  • Orange brings joy to many and therefore people use it to achieve joy. I personally choose yellow for that job.
  • Red is often seen as the color for energy. People use it when they need a boost of physical strength.
  • Turquoise is used to soothe when feeling ill for example.
  • Violet often represents respect. It can be used to build up self-esteem.
  • Yellow seems to help people who need to concentrate, such as a student writing an exam.

These are examples only. It is best to choose colors that have deep meaning for each individual. Colors may invoke completely different meanings for people. for example; red may cause a feeling of rage in some while in others a passion for love.

Therefore, use colors that enhance your emotions and feelings. Colors that help you to feel good!

Use Color Breathing Often

Use this technique often as a source to help relieve yourself from uncomfortable emotions and feelings. The more you use it the better you get at it. Your subconscious mind will begin to create healthier feelings and emotions within you. Eventually, just by thinking of the colors that make you feel better.

Enjoy the energy as it flows through your body and relax as you allow it to heal your anxiety, suffering and pain.
